You stood tall and brave; ready to face any challenge. The mountain wind ran it's cool fingers through your brown hair.
"ready?" you  said.
I nodded. You took my hand, as we descended into the dark cave. Your warm touch as my only comfort.
earlier that day
I ran my fingers down the splintering surface of the wooden post. There was another missing child poster, which had found it's place among many others. this one was of a little girl, named Sally. She had black eyes, like you.
"We should do something about this..." you said.
what? I thought. We knew what we would be dealing with, a large, ferocious beast. It prayed on the weak, the defenseless; children. That was us. Except we were a bit older than it's usual meals. I couldn't stand the thought of going within a hundred feet of the beast. The thought of losing you. You were my only friend.
"We can poison it." you suggested.
I said nothing, as usual. You had thought for a while. I loved to watch you think, because you would furrow your brow, and twirl your hair sometimes.  You had gathered up all your savings an bought a steak. A really big one, certain to catch the beast's attention. You had stolen some rat poison and pesticides from our neighbor, without his knowledge. Once it was done, you had marveled at your creation. What once looked appetizing, (once it was cooked, of course) was now a bubbling slab of flesh. Disgusting. You had also stolen a map, and used it to find the location of the beast's dwelling.
I was afraid. Nervous. If only I had spoken my mind. Told you how horrible this plan sounded. How dangerous it would be. But I kept to myself, as I often do.
later that day
Small slivers of light poked thought the ceiling of the cave, which was where the beast lived. The ground was soft with shredded clothing, pillows, and blankets. An eerie sight. I didn't realize how tightly I was holding your hand.
We should have turned back. When we had the chance.
We found ourselves in a large area, where I could see a large mountain of soft things. Resting on top, like a sleeping dog, was the beast.
I froze. I stopped breathing, almost. The beast looked like a large wolf, with pale blue fur,  no eyes, and facial adornments. Like a crown.
You pulled the meat from your messenger bag, and placed it on the ground, ever so carefully, and quietly. As soon as it was on the ground, you and I ran. Ran as fast as our feet would carry us. There was a strange sound coming from behind us. Like a snore. A new energy was fueled by fear. We ran twice as fast.
We were just outside the mouth of the cave, when I tripped. You were still standing, when you extended your hand in my direction, offering to help me to my feet. My own hand was just about to touch yours when you disappeared.
I hadn't realized where you had gone until I saw you impaled on the beasts needle-like fangs. Red dripped from it's mouth as it marched away, content. It acted as if I wasn't there. A reaction I had come to expect from everyone.
I went home that day, alone. I could not, for the life of me, wrap my head around the fact that you were never coming back.  Days passed, and there were no more disappearances. I still couldn't come to terms with my own thoughts. But I knew that your plan had worked. Two fishermen had gone out, and discovered the beast's body rotting in a field. They all danced gayly around it's carcass. I suppose, for a moment, I was happy. Much later, I had finally come to terms with your fate. But to this day, I sometimes wake up and wonder where you are.
A narrative essay I wrote for language arts. Also, one of my dreams. My original dream actually was much different, except for a few things.
Sorry if the ending is kinda sudden. It had to be two pages max, so I had to edit it down.
